This informal reading group will explore Islamic tradition from anthropological perspective. We will try to grasp the complexity of Islam by looking both at some practices considered central to this tradition and on discursive frames through which knowledge about such practices is shaped and produced today. The group will meet in the comfort of the Center for the Study of Islamic Culture (CSIC) on biweekly basis on Wednesdays between 6:30 pm and 8 pm. We will select one book and will read it chapter-by-chapter before every meeting. We will then discuss and reflect on the reading during the meeting. By the end of the term, participants of the reading group are expected to develop the ability and knowledge to engage the following questions: How to understand Islamic norms and practices? What is the socio-political background against which Islam and Muslims have come to occupy a particular place in the contemporary popular imaginary? How to develop an analytical language through which to make Muslims as well as their beliefs and practices legible to the wider publics?
